Images > 2008 – New York Transit Museum

A colorful New York Transit Museum sign hangs above the stairwell leading to the subterranean museum. A student displays a “MetroCard,” used to pay the fare to enter the subway. These cards replaced traditional tokens a few years ago. EVS students wave while riding a mock-up of a bus. The day at the museum familiarizes students with the practicalities of public transit, supporting development of independent travel skills. A student enters the cab of the bus mock-up and grabs the wheel.
Three students touch and look closely at a heavy red fire hydrant. Another young student enters the cab of the bus mock-up and takes the wheel. The CANY educator demonstrates how to use the turnstile to enter a subway platform Three students practice swiping their MetroCards at a mock-up of a subway turnstile.
A student plays the role of a subway clerk, selling MetroCards to cranky customers. The student clerk makes change for the purchase of a MetroCard. Aboard a life-sized, “retired” subway train, two students touch a metal loop, the kind that “straphangers” hold onto while riding a real train. Students and Museum educator touch benches inside a retired train. They compare fabrics used for benches in trains from different eras – bamboo, leather, plastic, metal.
Hand over hand, the Museum educator and student touch the perimeter of a train window. Two students smile while seated aboard a 1950’s era subway car. A student peers from between two parking meters – looks like she needs quarters. An EVS student touches a disembodied train engine, now resting on the subway platform.
A reproduction of the 1973 Daily News headline – FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD. The sign links contemporaneous social history to 1970’s transit technology.
