Practicing Inclusion in the Museum Workplace

The Museum Access Consortium is currently planning a fall workshop that will explore steps museums can take to provide opportunities in life skills and job skills development for adults with autism spectrum disorder. This programming is in response to two separate workshops hosted earlier this year by the Museum Access Consortium. Panelists from GRASP and parents of children with autism from the National Autism Association - NY Metro Chapter both expressed a need for cultural institutions to explore options for providing opportunities in the workplace for individuals on the autism spectrum.

As a starting point, MAC strongly encourages cultural partners in New York City to sign up their institutions to participate in National Disability Mentoring Day, scheduled for Wednesday, October 16th this year. Started in 1999 as a White House initiative, National Disability Mentoring Day promotes career development opportunities for students and job-seekers with disabilities through a day of hands-on career exploration, on-site job shadowing, and ongoing mentoring.  Companies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies are welcome to apply to become mentors for Disability Mentoring Day. DMD pairs students and job seekers with a career professional to learn about his/her typical work day and explore possible future internship or work opportunities. While Disability Mentoring Day is a one-day national and international effort, mentors and mentees are encouraged to stay in touch.    

The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities serves as the local coordinator for National Disability Mentoring Day. The deadline to apply to become a mentor for Disability Mentoring Day is this Friday, August 30th.
